italy is the fifth most visited country in international tourism arrivals. People from all around the world always says that Italy remains the most attractive and dream land of vacation for its rich history, art, fashion and at last but not least its cuisine.

Italy offers beautiful coastline and beaches, mountains and first of all an immersion in ancient history; she contains more World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world.

People have visited Italy for centuries, yet the first to visit the peninsula for touristic reasons were aristocrats during the Grand Tour, beginning in the late 17th century, and flourishing in the 18th century. In this period, many aristocrats, first of all from great Britain, visited Italy because it was the art cradle, in order to study ancient architecture and local culture.

But, at the end of 19 century, after a period where Grand Tour was mainly reserved for academics or the elite, thanks to the introduction of rail transport, the Grand Tour started to fall slightly out of vogue and a first form of mass tourism was bearing.Several Americans began to visit Italy and many more tourists came to the Penisula. Tourism remained very popular untile the late 1920s and 30s, when, with the Great depression and economic crisis first and the World War then, the tourism had a stop.

Only at the begin of the magic Sixties tourism returned to its status and raised higher standard. Today it still a big sector of domestic economy but many other remains to do.

Indeed the major visited sites are still the same, while Italy is full of small towns that they are worth to be known and visited.
